Mohs Micrographic Surgery (MMS) for skin cancer

Mohs micrographic surgery is also called margin controlled excision. It is a specialist type of surgery. It aims to remove all the skin cancer and leave as much healthy skin tissue as possible.

As it is a specialised type of surgery, your doctor might refer you to another hospital to have the treatment.

Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) is most useful for:

  • basal cell cancers that have come back after removal or have not been completely removed
  • basal cell cancers that have grown in an area that has had surgery or radiotherapy before
  • basal cell cancers that are growing into surrounding skin tissue
  • large skin cancers where removing as little of the healthy skin tissue as possible can mean a smaller scar
  • cancers in areas where it’s important to remove as little tissue as possible: for example, near the eyes, lips, ears or nose
  • some rare skin cancers

Further information is available here.

Other procedures

  • Cryotherapy
  • Local steroid injection for hair loss, keloid scarring and other inflammatory indications

A Consultant Dermatologist is a medically trained doctor who has completed further highest specialist training in dermatology. This is different to a doctor or medical or non medical practitioner who practices skin treatments or cosmetic treatments. You can check the specialist register for dermatology on the General Medical Council Website before choosing a ‘skin specialist’.

Only Consultant Dermatologists can prescribe the most effective skin treatments such as isotretinoin for acne, and systemic therapies for eczema and psoriasis where indicated. The skin care, cosmetic and aesthetic industry is largely unregulated and it is important to understand who you are seeing and if they are qualified to give you the most accurate and evidence based opinion and treatment.

To arrange a private consultation or discuss private surgical care, please contact our Private Patient Co-Ordinator Jane here.
